[edit] Background
Dracula is the main antagonist throughout the entire Castlevania saga. In nearly every Castlevania game you eventually have to face off against Dracula and put an end to him. Dracula wields the power of the Crimson Stone, and the Ebony Stone, with it he controls the forces of darkness, and even the divine powers of Death.
[edit] Origins
He was once known as Mathias Cronqvist, a man of genius level intellect and renowned battle tactician during the late-11th century. In the public eye he was a hero, fighting in the name of God with his comrade Baron Leon Belmont. However, few knew how often he committed acts of heresy by practicing the forbidden art of Alchemy. The secrets of Alchemy had been known within the Cronqvist family for generations and were passed on orally at first, and eventually compiled into a single book. At some point Mathias introduced the book to Rinaldo Gandolfi, and taught him the basics of the secret arts. Gandalfi stated that only a handful of people in "this world" knew about it, and that Mathias was the only person who truly understood it.
Mathias' heroic nature and knowledge of Alchemy seemed to be leading down a well marked if not predictable path of destiny. But fate had other plans. The turning point that led Mathias on a path of vengeance was the sudden loss of his beloved wife, Elisabetha. His deep love for his soul mate made his grief and anger unbearable, so much that he had become bedridden. Leon and the company were forced to continue their expedition without his guidance. Mathias grew to believe that God had took his wife without reason, after he fought for so long defending his name. These thoughts brought him to the brink of madness, and filled with utter hate he began plotting his revenge against God. He wished to become an unholy being, and use his eternal life curse God forever more, but he needed a powerful Vampire soul. He would even betray his closest friends to achieve this goal, Leon and Rinaldo. Mathias struck a deal with the vampire Walter Bernhard, to kidnap Leon's betrothed, Sara Trantoul. His plan was for Leon to search for her, and knowing Leon's strength, he knew he would defeat Bernhard. At some point Mathias found the legendary Crimson Stone, or perhaps he already had it. The stone was an ancient vampiric artifact, with this stone the user can absorb vampire souls and command the creatures of the night. Mathias was even able to control Death, and he commanded him to steal Bernhard's soul after Leon defeated him. This brought Mathias his wish, to become a Vampire and defy God by living an eternal life.
[edit] Early Castlevania - (Non-Canonical)
When the evil ruler of the eastern Europe, Vlad "The Impaler" Tepes had died, he transformed into an undead being which the people called Dracula, a vampire who could devour his victim's blood and turn them into vampires themselves, but Dracula was also power hungry. He wanted to rule the world after his wife, Lisa was executed for witchcraft. However, his plans were halted by a woman named Sonia Belmont, and from that point on, Dracula was the main enemy for the Belmont family. Iga has since taken these events out of the official Castlevania canon.
[edit] Appearances
Warning: Spoliers
[edit] In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Dracula appears in the beginning of the game. The beginning is referancing the game before it, Dracula X. It starts with Richter Belmont defeating Dracula in his castle.
The game then begins with Dracula's son, Alucard running into the castle years later. Bent on stoping his fathers ressurection, he goes through the castle in search for him.
Dracula appears as the final boss like he does in many other of the Castlevania games.
[edit] In Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
Dracula only appears toward the end of this game as well. He is referanced throughout the game by his loyal servant, Issac, but does not actually appear until Issacs death.
His part is very small in this game, however it is still a large role within this particular Castlevania storyline.
